Google Accelerated Mobile Pages Go Live Soon
Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are one of the buzz topics of 2016. There is alot of discussion in digital marketing circles, yet many business owners have not yet heard of them. This blog post explains what they are and why you should be aware of them.
AMPs have been developed by Google working alongside Twitter, partly in response to Facebook Instant Articles. As is often the case, something new is launched and if it appears to have potential, then other online competitors quickly develop their own alternative. An AMP is simply a web page that has less heavy code on it, so it is simpler, faster and ‘lighter’. A good word that is often used to describe an AMP is that its a streamlined webpage.
Google has been telling us all to make our normal webpages faster loading, especially for mobile users, so why now bring us Accelerated Mobile Pages? With these pages not only are they faster, but Google has provided a free hosted cached platform to make things even faster. The whole system is being developed in open-source and Analytics and Adwords are meant to still work with them. The pages would not replace your existing website, but have a tag on them telling Google they were AMPs, so in some cases Google will present your normal webpage, and in others your AMP, and sometimes both.
These pages are important because they will potentially be shown in a carousel of results at the top of pages, getting priority over other pages. So the key is that if you want better exposure and for your content to be shown ahead of others, then AMPs are another way to do this.
So what should you do now? Start by asking your developer about AMPs and seeing what options are for your webpages and CMS. Have a think about what pages on your site may be appropriate for an AMP version. Any good content such as company or product information, along with news and blog posts could be good candidates. And of course keep an eye out near the end of February to see when AMPs start showing in Google results!
